Understanding The Long Limbs Of Trauma – 16th and 17th of October

This 2 day in-person clinician workshop will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the long limbs of trauma and its pervasive impact on brain function, impulsivity and behavioural dysfunction, it will also explore the importance and application of self care for clients and health professionals working with trauma.

Day 1 – ‘Understanding Myself’ – aims to provide participants with embodied knowledge about complex trauma, neurobiology and the adaptability of the human nervous system.
Day 2 – ‘Caring for Myself’ – addresses the parallel process of health professionals caring for themselves personally and professionally, whilst simultaneously educating and guiding their clients towards embodied self-care.

Outcomes of Day 1

Day 1 – ‘Understanding Myself’ – aims to provide participants with embodied knowledge about complex trauma, neurobiology and the adaptability of the human nervous system.

Outcomes of Day 1 – participants will:

Understand the impact of trauma on the brain and social engagement systems, and the way it interferes with professional and personal relationships.
Be aware of the concept of neuroplasticity and its relationship to recovery from complex trauma.
Be equipped to detect trauma in clients and understand the need for provision of safety in all interactions.
Identify how trauma can impact learning – and draw on tips to strengthen educational engagement both within and outside the classroom.
Be aware of the politics of trauma – including systemic and financial trauma, and the role of power and privilege within healthcare systems as well as society.
Demonstrate skills to assist in stepping back, maintaining perspective, and containing the trauma
Increase awareness about both the uniqueness of pathways to healing as well as their commonality.

Outcomes of Day 2

Day 2 – ‘Caring for Myself’ – addresses the parallel process of health professionals caring for themselves personally and professionally, whilst simultaneously educating and guiding their clients towards embodied self-care.

Outcomes of Day 2 – participants will:

Identify principles for self-care, reducing burnout and vicarious trauma professionally.
Demonstrate awareness of ‘bottom up’ and ‘top down’ strategies for self-regulation and their impact on neurobiology
Expand their knowledge on the science of habits, becoming aware of how integral new habit development is to long term healing and neuroplasticity
Build personal interoceptive awareness as well as gaining strategies to assist clients in connecting to their own capacity for interoception
Understand the need to establish a ‘SEEDS’ approach to the foundation of self-care – with this training including knowledge and experiential exercises addressing all components (Sleep, Exercise, Education, Diet and Social Connection).
Gain knowledge about the causes of flashbacks and 90/10 reactions – including practical means of managing and lessening their impact and frequency.
Be equipped with knowledge regarding settling the nervous system somatically through breath work, shaking, intentional sighing and Shinrin Yoku.
