Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Group

Our DBT group offers a safe place to learn and explore how these practical skills can help you to feel more empowered and in control of distress and intense emotions.

About the Birchtree DBT group

DBT is a practical modality which aims to help people to improve personal relationships, communication skills and learn effective regulating resources to better manage stress and intense emotions. This group offers a safe and welcoming place to participate in meaningful learning with Karen, who is an experienced psychotherapist and DBT facilitator.
Most people struggle with emotion dysregulation at some point in their lives, which might be in the context of addiction, trauma, stress, loss, or relationships.

This 8-week trauma sensitive group aims to resource people who feel that they would benefit from the DBT skills that help with: distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. These are all underpinned with practical mindfulness skills aiming to increase your personal conscious awareness which will make using these skills more likely. This 8-week program will provide participants with practical skills to aid and enhance their personal therapy journey.

Requirements to participate in the group are a minimum age of 18 years and that you are engaged in individual therapy.

Who is this group for?

This group therapy is a match for you if you are interested in resourcing yourself with practical skills for managing big emotions, stress, and improving communication and relationships.

Our DBT group offers a safe place to learn and explore how these practical skills can help you to feel more empowered and in control of distress and intense emotions. Most people struggle with emotion dysregulation at some point in their lives, which could be in the context of addiction, trauma, stress, loss, or relationships.

How we facilitate the DBT Group

This 8-week group aims to resource people with practical skills to enhance your sense of coping. This will be a facilitator led, learning style group which draws from the four core modules of DBT: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. While learning and practicing these skills there will be room for reflection and discussion.

This is a trauma sensitive group that is underpinned by principles of polyvagal theory, ‘the science of safety’ to ensure that you feel as comfortable as possible in the group while you learn skills that will help you to feel more connected to yourself and others, notice when you are feeling disconnected and learn to use the skills to be able to bring yourself back into regulation.
